Portuguese Wines

portoportugalWeekly Tasting: Tues, Mar 9 – Thurs, Mar 11

This week we try three tasty treats from three different regions of Portugal. Featuring:

  • Calcada Vinho Verde Reserve, Vinho Verde – It’s not often we run across a reserve Vinho Verde, but after tasting this, we look forward to trying more! Green apple, honeysuckle, lemon and melon combine in this light, elegant frizzante with a nice salty minerality on the finish. $14 btl, $7 btg
  • Lago, Douro – This blend of 4 local varietals (Tinta Barroca, Tinta Roriz, Touriga Franca, Touriga Nacional) is hand harvested then fermented in stainless steel before aging in French & American oak to highlight lovely ripe flavors of strawberry, blackberry, and dried plums with a touch of tobacco on the finish. $12 btl, $6 btg
  • Dirk Niepoort Rotulo Tinto, Dao – The Niepoort family has been famous for their ports and wines since the early 1800s and this silky red is no exception. Grown in the high-altitude region of Dao, which is famous for its red blends, this combination of 4 local varietals (dominated by Touriga Nacional, the main grape in port) is from old-vine growth and aged in concrete to let the fruit flavours shine through: dark plum and black berries combine with allspice, pepper and a hint of earth. $19 btl, $8 btg

Tasting: $11
