Straight from the Cape

Weekly Wine Flight: Tues, Oct 12 – Thurs, Oct 14

This week we try three new South African wines arriving from the southern most tip of the country. Featuring:

  • Steenberg Sparkling Sauvignon Blanc, Constantia – That’s right, a Sparkling Sav Blanc! From the oldest farm on the Cape (est 1662) comes this bright, zesty white with tropical flavours of granadilla, pineapple and guava combined with a twist of lemon and lime. $19 btl, $8 btg
  • Paul Cluver Estate Pinot Noir, Elgin — A pioneer in cultivating vines in the cooler climate of Elgin has made the Cluver family (now in its 4th generation) famous for wines on par with Burgundy, and this Estate Pinot Noir is a perfect example: rich earthy notes open up to the soft smell of violets and flavors of red cherry, blackberry and raspberry with a slight hint of smoke and oak on the finish.  $28 btl, $10 btg
  • Big Flower Botanica Cab Franc, Stellenbosch — Surprisingly silky and smooth for a Cab Franc, this rich red from winemaker Ginny Povall is sustainably farmed and naturally fermented to highlight the dark fruit flavors of the grape (black berry, black plum) as well as the savory, earthy undertones. $23 btl, $9 btg

Tasting: $15

Flatbread Pairing $8: Peppadew & Salami
